Peshawar Nights
Written by
Sayyid Muhammad al-Musawi al-Shirazi
The debate systematically addresses key theological and historical differences between the two major branches of Islamโincluding the successorship to the Prophet Muhammad, the status of the Ahlul Bayt (the Prophet's family), the concept of Imamah (divine leadership), and specific practices like combining ritual prayers. A core rule established at the outset was that all arguments had to be supported using mutually recognized sources, leading the author to argue the Shi'i position almost entirely through Sunni Hadith collections, Qur'anic commentaries, and historical treatises. The result is a detailed bibliographical defense of Shi'ism designed to promote structured, source-based dialogue between both traditions.

descriptionSynopsis
Peshawar Nights (Shabhaye-Peshawar) is a landmark theological work documenting a ten-night public debate held in Peshawar (then British India) in January 1927. The dialogue took place between a young Shi'i scholar, Sayyid Muhammad al-Musawi al-Shirazi (known as Sultanu'l-Waโadhim), and leading Sunni scholars of the region, including Hafiz Muhammad Rashid and Sheikh Abdu's-Salam. Recorded verbatim by newspaper reporters in front of an audience of roughly 200 people, the transcripts were later compiled into Persian by al-Shirazi and translated into multiple languages, becoming a widely studied text on SunniโShi'a doctrinal discussions.
